Weekly Tip #4: EQ the Effects Bus

It’s easy to feed stuff to the effects bus and then forget about it.

Don’t! It is especially important to EQ your reverbs.

It depends on the case of course but I usually do three things with reverbs:

  • Cut everything below 200-300hz or even higher – don’t need the muddyness and rumble on reverbs.
  • Apply a few dB’s of broad Q cut around 2000-7000hz – reduce shizzle to allow details in your main sounds (especially vocals) to come through better.
  • Cut the highs if there are any – again they are unnecessary on most reverbs and only make your track sound less defined.

Remove what’s not needed and what’s left will shine. Simple.
