Contemplations on the Art of Music Production

Turn Off Your Screen

This little music production tip is very simple, but don’t underestimate it’s power. In fact I’m pretty sure you’ll be surprised how effective it is if you haven’t tried it before.

I originally learned this in a studio session with Blu Mar Ten a few years back. The guys would periodically turn off the workstation screen and just listen.

What helps even more: close your eyes as well. You will hear more and better.

You’ll notice the effects right away. There are a number of reasons for why this works:

  • “Seeing is believing”. We are very visually oriented creatures by nature. We have a tendency to trust our eyes over our ears.
  • A big part of our brain capacity goes into processing what we see. By freeing the brain from the visual duties we allow it to shift the focus and process more of what we hear.
  • It’s easy to get distracted by something on the screen and simply lose concentration. Sometimes it’s just good to force yourself to it.

Give it a shot and you will see. I mean, you won’t
